Smoke testing is one of the most effective ways to detect hidden leaks, breaks, or unauthorized connections in your sewer or drainage system. During the process, we introduce a safe, non-toxic smoke into your drain lines using a blower. The smoke travels through the pipes and exits through any openings—broken fittings, cracked joints, or faulty seals—showing us exactly where problems are hiding.
This test allows us to uncover issues you might never see from the surface. If smoke is escaping from a yard, crawlspace, wall, or vent where it shouldn’t be, we know right away there’s a leak or defect in the line. This helps us identify the exact location of the issue without needing to dig or tear into walls.
Smoke testing can identify a wide range of plumbing problems that are otherwise hard to trace. If you’ve been smelling foul sewer odors inside your home or business, the cause is often a dry trap, broken seal, or cracked line. Smoke testing helps confirm exactly where the air is escaping so it can be repaired properly.
We also use smoke testing to locate breaks in sewer lines under slabs, behind walls, or in landscaping. In some cases, it can uncover illegal connections to the sewer system, like sump pumps or gutter downspouts, that can overload your drainage during heavy rains.
In commercial buildings or multifamily homes, this method helps uncover cross-connections or improper vents that could be affecting air pressure in the system. The result is a thorough map of problem areas so we can create a repair plan that addresses the actual cause.
While camera inspections are valuable for visual confirmation inside the pipes, they don’t always reveal problems with airflow or odor migration. Smoke testing fills that gap. It shows how air and gases move through your system, which is important if you’re experiencing mysterious smells but don’t see any clogs or backups.
Unlike acoustic sensors or infrared scanning, smoke testing gives us real-time visual confirmation of a leak’s exact location. It’s faster than many other methods, less invasive, and provides a high level of accuracy.
In many cases, we’ll combine a smoke test with a camera inspection to verify both the structural and air integrity of the drain system. This gives you a complete picture of what’s going on underground and behind your walls.
When we perform a smoke test, we start by sealing off certain sections of the plumbing system. Then we introduce the smoke and monitor the property for any unusual emissions. You might see harmless white smoke rising from the yard, roof vents, or other openings. This is completely normal.
We’ll keep you informed during every step of the process. If any leaks are found, we’ll show you where they are and explain your options for repair. There’s no residue or cleanup needed from the smoke itself, and your water lines remain completely unaffected.
Our smoke tests are efficient, safe, and often the fastest way to solve frustrating plumbing mysteries. Whether you’re dealing with bad smells or suspect a hidden drain leak, this method gives you clarity and peace of mind.

I called Mike at World Class and he responded within hours and kept me informed when he was delayed at the prior job. It was a very difficult blockage due to my old galvanized pipes and a T-joint that joined the two. Mike spent almost 2 hours trying to get it unclogged. Most people would have given up, but he persisted and got it cleared. He lived-up to his “world-Class” name. Thanks Mike, I will be calling you again, and recommending you to anyone who asks.Posted on Joy KimTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had a major issue in my basement with how the plumbing was set up. The previous owner had set up a horrible system. I had three other plumbers look at the issue and all of them misdiagnosed the issue. Mike and Mike recognized it right away and did fantastic work fixing it. Recently, they cleaned out a blockage in my septic tank pipe and replaced a toilet. Throughout the process they walked me through each step of what they were doing. When identifying issues they provided multiple solutions and recommendations. They are extremely professional, always respond quickly, and provide fantastic quality work. I can't recommend them enough.Posted on Richard LevowTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. On April 19th, 2025 the downstairs toilet in our home overflowed. As a result, the den level and basement required full remediation. This included removing all of the paneling in the den as well as sheetrock in the bathroom and basement. Once the carpeting was removed, we discovered that the floor tile was asbestos which required an additional protocol for removal. Fast forward to August 1st. The space was now roughly 70% done. The downstairs toilet was still not replaced. Someone flushed the upstairs toilet and water came gushing out of the toilet flange downstairs flooding the bathroom, part of the basement and part of the den. That required 4 days worth of work to be ripped out. In addition, I now had another claim with another deductible. As soon as this happened, I called World Class. Mike and Mike came out in the late afternoon and snaked the line from the outside of the house. They strongly recommended that I have them come back and inspect the sewer line with their camera. Mike returned the next week and we discovered that the sewer line to the main was separated. He explained to me that the situation that I had could be repaired with a high tech machine that they use for this type of problem. The machine coats the pipe with an epoxy resin which is more durable than the current pipe material. He assured me that it would resolve the issue. Mike, Mike, Hector and Gio came out that Friday and worked on the sewer line. They were at the house for roughly 10 hours. They worked in a highly professional manner and explained to me what they were doing as they proceeded. Needless to say having your house flood out twice is very stressful. Mike and Mike were excellent at calming my nerves. I highly recommend them should you ever have sewer or plumbing issues.Posted on Annamarie BurriesciTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had World Class Sewer & Drain come to my home in Oceanside, NY to install a new toilet and I couldn’t be happier with the service. The technician showed up on time, was professional, and made the whole process quick and stress-free. The installation was done perfectly and they left the bathroom spotless when they were finished.
